Q: What is Choi Kwang Do?
A:
Choi Kwang Do is a revolutionary martial art based on scientific principles that create explosive power from easy to learn, natural body movements. The curriculum centres around practical methods for effective self-defence whilst also focusing on health and personal development. For further information please see the
About Choi Kwang Do
page or visit the
Choi Kwang Do Martial Art International
website
Q: Will I get hurt?
A:
No,
each Choi Kwang Do technique has been developed to work in harmony with the body’s natural movements, therefore eliminating undue strain on your joints, such as hyperextension, or “lock out”, movements found in many traditional martial arts. All drills are performed in a controlled environment where safety is paramount. This environment is
created by the high level of discipline, respect and courtesy held by all students and instructors.
.
Q: Will I fight in competitions?
A:
No, the Choi Kwang Do system is based on self-defence, which is in no way comparable to a competition environment. In competition there are strict rules and a referee to ensure fair play, this is not the case in a street attack. The focus of competition is to score points, rather than to eliminate an attacker. This results in the use of non-powerful
techniques and stopping them short to prevent harm to an opponent.
Once the body is conditioned to using incomplete techniques it becomes difficult not to transfer this habit to a street attack, making them ineffective. Further to this Choi Kwang Do encourages the use of non-violent resolutions to conflict and therefore does not agree with
deliberately putting yourself in a position where it is necessary to fight.
Q: Do I need to be fit?
A:
No, Choi Kwang Do is a progressive system that uses anaerobic and cardiovascular training methods to develop fitness through regular training. It is recognised that individuals have differing capabilities, therefore training methods and intensity are adjusted to suit individual needs.
.
Q: How old must I be to start training?
A:
The nature of the Choi Kwang Do system means that people of all ages and abilities are able to train. The oldest Choi Kwang-Do student is 90 years old and the youngest is 3 years old. Here at the Phil Little Choi Kwang Do Academy we accept students from 10 years old. However, we will accept younger childeren if enrolled as a family group
Q: What will happen when I start my training?
A:
Our Introductory Programme consists of 2 semi-private lessons with a fully qualified instructor. Each of these will last approximately 20-30 minutes and will serve to teach both basic techniques and etiquette for the training environment. Once these are completed you will join in with the normal class schedule, although further semi-private lessons will make up part of your training time during these classes.
